How to preserve vegetables:

          Take a bowl with some water in it. Now add two table spoons of vinegar in it. Put the vegetables in this bowl for 30 seconds. The vegetables are preserved now. These vegetables can be stored for a longer period.

How to use onion in salad if it is too sharp in taste:

          If an onion is too sharp in taste, wash, drain and toss into some beaten curd. Add a dash of salt and pepper, it becomes a tasty raitha.

How to retain green color of peas etc. while boiling in water:

          Add a pinch of soda bicarb to the water to boil peas etc. faster and also to retain their bright green colour.

How to manage smells of foods in the fridge:

          Place a tsp. of soda bicarb in a corner of the fridge in a small crucible. This will keep smells of foods in the fridge from permeating each other.

Important tip for lunch boxes:

          Rub a piece of lime (used) inside the lunch box to get rid of strong odours (like garlic) before rinsing off.

Kitchen Scissors:

          Always use a clean pair of kitchen scissors to trim edges of bread. Much neater and less messy edges as compared to those trimmed with a knife.

How to clean mirrors:

Wipe mirrors first with pieces of moist newspaper and then with dry newspaper to get a clean, spotless mirror.

In case oil begins to foam on heating:

Sometimes oil begins to foam on heating to deep fry and rises dangerously in the pan. To dissipate the foam add a marble sized ball of tamarind to the oil.

How to reheat fried snacks:

Use tissue papers for reheating fried snacks. Eg. samosa, vada, kachori, bhajji, etc. The paper will absorb the excess oil and moisture and keep the snack crisp. Reheat on high for 1-1 1/2 minute.

How to prevent egg shells from cracking:

To prevent egg shells from cracking, add a pinch of salt to the water before hard-boiling.

Determining the egg whether it is fresh or not:

          To determine whether an egg is fresh, immerse it in a pan of cool, salted water. If it sinks, it is fresh-if it rises to the surface, throw it away.

Over-salt dish:

          If you accidentally over-salt a dish while it's still cooking, drop in a peeled potato-it absorbs the excess salt for an instant "fix me up."

Chopping dry fruit often proves itself a difficult task. The best way to chop the dry fruit is to place them first in the fridge for 30 minutes and then dip in the hot water. Drain at once from hot water and cut them with knife.

Place the lemons at room temperature and then roll them under your palm against the cutting board or kitchen counter for a few minutes. Now squeeze the lemons. If the lemons are hard you can also put them in warm water for 5-8 minutes. This way the lemons will yield maximum juice.

Pour 1/4 cup white vinegar and 1 cup water in a small glass and then microwave on high for 5 minutes.  The steam from the vinegar water will remove any odors and will soften baked-on splatters.  Open the oven door and allow some of the steam to escape before you start to wipe down the walls.  After the vinegar water cools down, dip a sponge or cloth into the water and use it to wipe off the inside surfaces of the microwave and around the door seals.
